What I'm Reading

The World is a Book
Chances are you’ve heard this travel quote before. It’s at the top of nearly every travel quote list. Heck, it may even be your all-time favorite travel quote!
But while it’s often attributed to St. Augustine (AKA Augustine of Hippo), scholars have never located this quote in St. Augustine’s writings. Instead, they believe the phrase was written in the mid-1700s by Louis-Charles Fougeret de Monbron in Le Cosmopolite ou le Citoyen du Monde, a book that translates to The Cosmopolitan or the Citizen of the World. But Fougeret de Monbron’s quote is, “The universe is a sort of book whose first page one has read when one has seen only one’s own country.”
Whichever quote speaks to you, no matter how far you roam and regardless of the number of countries you visit, most explorers believe that books and travel go together like an on-time departure and a contented traveler. Whether a true story or fiction, whether set in the past, present, or future, books add new context and perspective to your travels.
