Defining a Day Trip

A day trip lets you wake up in Paris, spend the day exploring somewhere new, and still fall asleep in the same cozy spot that night. Within a few hours of the city, you can walk in the footsteps of French royalty, see the landscapes that inspired world-famous artists, or wander medieval streets straight out of a fairytale.

To maximize your time exploring, this list focuses on destinations within about two hours of Paris. That means you won’t find destinations like London and Normandy below (even though you’re likely to see them listed in other Paris day trip articles.) In my opinion, there’s just no way to:

  • Make it all the way to London, walk across the Tower Bridge, ride the London Eye, and do the other things you want to do while still making it back to Paris that night.
  • Explore the D-Day beaches in Normandy (like Omaha Beach), pay your respects to all who lost their lives in World War II, and make it back to Paris without being utterly exhausted.

Travel times are estimated from the Eiffel Tower, the city’s unmistakable landmark. After all, going to Paris and not seeing the Eiffel Tower is like going to Rome and not seeing the Colosseum. Be sure to do it right with the best Eiffel Tower tour in the City of Lights.

Whether you rent a car and road trip or rely on France’s well-connected public transportation, these trips are easy to plan. Just double-check for any transportation strike before heading out!

Sage Advice: If you plan on renting a car for your Paris day trip, opt for a location away from the city center. It will be less hectic and stressful if you do!

Palace of Versailles

Approximately 15 km | About 35 min by car or an hour by train from Gare Montparnasse

The Versailles Palace is a UNESCO World Heritage site that dazzles with wealth, power, and artistry. This popular day trip destination was once the home of King Louis XIV (the Sun King) and Marie Antoinette. The extravagant estate was designed to impress, from its gilded gates to the famous Hall of Mirrors. Every inch of the palace is a showcase of luxury, with ornate ceilings, intricate tapestries, and enough gilded gold to make Midas jealous.

But the grandeur doesn’t stop at the palace walls. The sprawling formal gardens stretch for nearly 2,000 acres, with perfectly aligned pathways, dancing fountains, and vibrant flowerbeds that change with the seasons. A visit wouldn’t be complete without stopping by the Grand Trianon and Petit Trianon, retreats built for royals seeking a more private escape from court life.

Auvers-sur-Oise

Approximately 35 km | About 45 min by car or 90 min by public transport from Gare du Nord

For art lovers, a day in the picturesque village of Auvers-sur-Oise is a must. This charming town was the final home of Vincent van Gogh, who completed an astonishing 80 paintings in just 70 days here. Walking through town feels like stepping into one of his canvases, with golden fields, stone cottages, and the very church he immortalized in The Church at Auvers.

A short walk from the train station leads to the Auberge Ravoux, where van Gogh spent his last days. Though his tiny attic room remains empty, the atmosphere is thick with history. A visit to the cemetery, where Vincent rests beside his brother Theo, offers a quiet moment to reflect on his genius. The village itself is an artist’s dream, filled with galleries, museums, and landscapes that continue to inspire.

Giverny

Approximately 75 km | About 90 min by car

A day trip to Giverny feels like stepping into a painting — literally. This quaint village was home to Claude Monet, the legendary artist who captured its beauty in countless masterpieces. Today, his former residence is the Fondation Claude Monet Museum, where visitors can tour his home, studio, and the fabulous gardens that inspired his iconic Water Lilies series.

While Monet’s brightly colored farmhouse offers a peek into his daily life, it’s the gardens that steal the show. The flower beds burst with color throughout the seasons, and the Japanese bridge, draped in wisteria, is instantly recognizable. Whether you’re an art enthusiast or simply someone who appreciates a peaceful stroll among nature’s finest work, Giverny is an unforgettable day trip from Paris.

“Giverny is the perfect day trip for artists, gardeners and all creative people. The blooms in the garden are unmatched. It’s so striking to see the things that inspired Monet and understand the beauty behind his paintings. Be sure to get some photos of yourself on the Japanese bridge.”

Disneyland Paris

Approximately 70 km | About an hour by car or by public transport from Gare de Lyon

For a day filled with enchantment, Disneyland Paris brings fairy tales to life just outside the French capital. From the moment you pass through the gates, you’re transported to a world where Sleeping Beauty’s Castle towers over cobblestone streets, and beloved characters roam the parks.

Thrill-seekers can brave Star Wars Hyperspace Mountain or The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, while younger visitors can take a spin on Dumbo the Flying Elephant or set sail with Pirates of the Caribbean. Live performances, dazzling parades, and a nighttime fireworks display over the castle make for a magical day filled with laughter and thrills, whether it’s your first visit or your fiftieth.

Rouen

Approximately 140 km | About 120 min by car or 150 min by public transport from the Saint-Lazare train station

With its half-timbered houses, towering Gothic cathedral, and deep historical roots, Rouen offers a glimpse into France’s medieval past. This riverside city is best known as the place where Joan of Arc was tried and executed, but its charm extends far beyond its storied past.

A visit to the Rouen Cathedral is a must. Its intricate facade inspired Claude Monet, who painted it in varying light and weather conditions. Strolling through the old town, you’ll find the Gros Horloge, a stunning astronomical clock that has kept time since the 14th century. Whether you’re here for history, architecture, or simply a leisurely walk through picturesque streets, Rouen delivers a rewarding escape from Paris.

Chartres

Approximately 90 km | About 75 minutes by car or 90 minutes by public transport from Gare Montparnasse

Like Rouen, one of the star attractions of the medieval town of Chartres is its magnificent cathedral. The Chartres Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is an awe-inspiring example of French Gothic architecture, famous for its intricate facade, towering spires, and breathtaking stained glass windows—many of which date back to the 12th and 13th centuries.

Beyond the UNESCO World Heritage site, the town itself is a delight to explore. Wander through the historic center, where half-timbered houses and cobbled streets create a storybook setting. Stop into a local café to enjoy delicious French cuisine, or stroll along the Eure River, where charming bridges and peaceful pathways offer a slower pace than bustling Paris.

Chateau de Chenonceau

Approximately 240 km | About 2 1/2 hours by either car or public transport using Gare Montparnasse

Located in the Loire Valley, a day trip to the Chateau de Chenonceau will take you the farthest from Paris. But when you get your first glimpse of the 16th-century castle stretching across the Cher River, you’ll understand why it is one of the most visited castles in France and be glad you made the trip.

Few castles in France are as breathtaking as Château de Chenonceau, an architectural gem stretching gracefully across the Cher River. Known as the “Ladies’ Castle,” this 16th-century masterpiece was shaped by the powerful women who lived here, including Diane de Poitiers and Catherine de Medici.

Beyond its elegant arches and opulent interiors, the château is surrounded by beautifully manicured gardens, each reflecting the influence of the women who designed them. Whether you’re admiring the grand gallery spanning the river or strolling through the flower-filled grounds, Chenonceau is a storybook setting that feels worlds away from the bustle of Paris.
