Andele Restaurante - The Best Las Cruces Mexican Restaurant For Tacos Al Carbon And Salsa
Located in the historic town of Mesilla, about five miles southwest of downtown Las Cruces, Andele Restaurante has been one of the best Mexican restaurants in Las Cruces for nearly two decades. Everything on the menu is made from scratch daily, and the heat can be turned up (or down) to deliver just the right experience for your taste buds.
Sage Advice: Just across the street from Andele Restaurante is the sister restaurant, The Dog House, that features standard American fare — hot dogs, burgers, wings, and cheesesteak sandwiches — with a Mexican flare. Yes, there are green chiles incorporated into most dishes!
Our family recommends:
- Tacos al Carbon. Because Andele Restaurante delivers an authentic Mexican experience, don’t expect ground hamburger meat in your tacos. Rather, look for tender pieces of marinated, slow-cooked beef, pork, or chicken in this house specialty dish.
- Combination Plate. To experience more of the homemade goodness that is Andele Restaurante, order one of the three combination plates.
- Salsa Bar. Andele Restaurante is known for their salsas, so don’t miss the opportunity to try them all at the salsa bar.
- Tortillas at the Mercado. Take home some freshly made from scratch tortillas by stopping at the Mercado before you go!
Andele Restaurante opens daily at 8:00 am. They close after lunch on Mondays, but are open until 9:00 pm the other nights of the week. Find them in historic Old Mesilla at the corner of Calle del Norte and Avenida de Mesilla at 1950 Calle del Norte.

Or you can get all of that fajita goodness rolled into a fajita burrito. Either way, expect a ton of fabulous fajita flavors for your food bucks!
- Chile Rellenos. Get two of these delicious stuffed peppers smothered in green sauce next to a side of rice and beans by ordering the chile relleno plate. Or get a single chile relleno by ordering the combination plate or one on the side of any other menu option.

For hundreds of years, people traveled through Las Cruces, New Mexico, on the famed El Camino Real moving traded goods between Mexico City and Santa Fe. And since 1957, modern-day visitors have enjoyed delicious Mexican food at La Nueva Casita Cafe along this historic route. Open daily, the cafe serves breakfast, lunch, and dessert.

La Posta de Mesilla - Best Las Cruces Mexican Restaurant For Ambiance, Margaritas, And Sopapillas
If the 150-year-old adobe walls of La Posta de Mesilla could talk, oh, the tales they could tell! As the Corn Exchange Hotel, this favorite stop along the Butterfield Stagecoach Line survived Apache attacks and housed Billy the Kid. When the building was transformed into La Posta Cafe by Katy Griggs just before World War II, there were only four tables, dirt floors, and no running water. Entering the large, Territorial style building today, guests can admire a zaguan filled with exotic, tropical birds and a piranha-filled fish tank.
- Margaritas. Starting with quality tequila and freshly squeezed lime, La Posta de Mesilla has a margarita menu that other Mexican restaurants envy.
- La Posta Special. Sample several items by ordering the La Posta Special of a folded taco, chile relleno, and a beef green chile enchilada. In addition to a side of refritos and rice, you won’t want to miss the Mexican coleslaw that comes with this dish.
- Sopapillas. Don’t order too much for dinner, because you’ll want to save room for sopapillas. These puffy pastry squares are served hot with plenty of honey.
- La Posta Cookbook. After enjoying one of the best Mexican restaurants in Las Cruces, stop by the La Posta gift shop to purchase a cookbook. For just under $13, you’ll find recipes for red chile, chile con carne, tamales, rellenos, and more in the 34-page, softbound book illustrated by Las Cruces artist Carolyn Bunch.

The Shed Restaurant - Best Huevos Rancheros in Las Cruces
Although the cumin-spiced ground beef filling in most tacos across the nation is an American creation from north of the border, huevos rancheros is an authentic Mexican breakfast dish. And one of the best places to enjoy the cooked-to-order eggs over fresh corn tortillas topped with cheese red or green chiles is at The Shed.
Everything on the menu is made from scratch using fresh, seasonal, locally-sourced ingredients, so you’re sure to enjoy any of the other breakfast and lunch items on the menu, as well.
Sage Advice: When you visit The Shed for brunch on Saturday, be sure to check out the amazing mimosa specials!
Our family recommends:
- Huevos Rancheros. Obviously! The Shed does this traditional Mexican country breakfast better than anyone else in Las Cruces (and maybe the world)!
- Breakfast Enchiladas. This creative twist on breakfast tacos fills two blue corn tortillas with your choice of meat — pork sausage, turkey sausage, or brisket — then adds onions and cheese and tops the rolls with red or green chile.
- Eggsadillas. Wake up to an am version of quesadillas that stuff crisply fried flour tortillas with scrambled eggs and beef brisket.
Visit The Shed at 810 Valley Drive where it operates on a perpetual long weekend schedule from 7:30 am to 2:00 pm Thursdays through Sundays.

We ate at La Posta on a Wednesday night. The food was some of the better food we’ve had during the 5 days we’ve been here so far.
That being said Las Cruces isn’t a foodie and night life kinda place (least not at the tail end of March).
I do have to also say that the parrots at La Posta are NOT an attraction. They’re majestic birds that don’t want to spend their entire lives caged in the entryway of a Mexican food restaurant.
When asked the staff agreed that they didn’t like looking at them in their depressing enclosures day in and day out but one staff person tried to put us at ease letting us know “they let them out around the restaurant at night after we close”. Something I’m sure the Las Cruces health department would be love to know more about.
These birds live in a noisy restaurant surrounded by strangers poking at them all day, never even exposed to daylight for gods sake. They’re highly intelligent animals that bond with a single handler and are not always the most social of creatures even with that there was an attention starved Cockatoo that would put out one little toe for us to pet.
Some of the birds have been in these living conditions for over 30 years according to some of the staff.
You like the majestic birds being associated with your families local Mexican restaurant branding?
Build them an appropriate aviary. Employ a handler to feed and enrich their lives.
Stop with the circus side show attraction for unattended spoiled children to taunt while waiting for a table.
Add Nopalitos to the list! The green chile salsa is to die for! They won’t reveal their secret recipe, but I suspect there are magical properties involved. After visiting Las Cruces, I always fly home with a cooler full of frozen Nopalitos green chile salsa containers!
I’ll have to check it out the next time I’m in Las Cruces! Thanks for the tip!
Sage, this is a lovely post. It makes me super hungry and really makes me miss being back home in the states. I’ve already pinned these locations on my map for the next time i’ll be in the states.
Love reading your work!
